Based on our method for preparing ZnS:RE
a new flux method for preparing Sm
3+
activated alkaline earth sulfide has been developed. The luminescence effeciency of the new amber phosphor prepared with our method
is about 12%. The phosphor consisted of well-crystallized dispersed particles and the surface of the particles is smooth. The emission color of the phosphor is orange-yellow with chromaticity x=0.563
y=0.423. It is a current amber CRT material for the computer terminal display. The voltage dependence of the intensity under 1μA/cm
2
CR excitation is better than that of P
1
-Zn
2
SiO
4
:Mn. The luminance is about 90% of P
1
. The properties of the CRT coating with the amber phosphor are expected to be available for the computer terminal display.
